Lumière is an audiovisual live performance from acclaimed sound artist and producer Robert Henke. Three powerful white lasers draw rapid successions of ephemeral objects, seemingly floating in space, while the data used to draw the shapes is transformed into audible frequencies. Laser patterns and sonic treatments are performed as an improvised dialogue between the artist and the audiovisual machine, highlighting the piece as an exploration of synchronicity and divergence, using light and darkness, slow movements and sudden bursts of sound and motion within the performance.
Robert Henke is a German sound artist who builds and operates machines that create sounds, shapes and structures. Henke’s work uses computer generated sound and images, field recordings, photography and light; transformed, rearranged and modulated by mathematical rules, real time interaction and controlled random operations. Henke is also responsible for groundbreaking techno productions under the Monolake moniker, which alongside contemporaries Basic Channel, epitomises the ‘Berlin’ sound, and has been one of the driving forces behind contemporary club culture since the early 90’s.Henke’s work has a particular focus on the exploration of spaces, both virtual and physical. Many of his works use multiple channels of audio or are specifically conceived for unique locations and their individual spatial properties.
Robert Henke is also one of the main creators of the music software ‘Ableton Live‘, which since its invention in 1999 became the standard tool for electronic music production and completely redefined the performance practice of electronic music.
